Pre-emergent herbicides work by creating a chemical barrier in the soil that prevents weed seeds from germinating — but timing is everything. Apply too late and crabgrass has already sprouted; apply too early and the barrier breaks down before the full germination window closes. In the Fredericksburg area, the target window is typically late February through mid-March, when soil temperatures reach 50–55°F at a 2-inch depth. A good rule of thumb locally is to apply around the time forsythia begins to bloom. This product will not control crabgrass that has already emerged — it must go down before germination occurs. Do not apply to areas where you plan to seed within the same season, as it will prevent grass seed germination as well.
Application
Apply with a broadcast or drop spreader to established turf. Water in after application. Do not apply near water, storm drains, or drainage ditches.
