Good to Know River rock is a decorative stone — it does not compact, so it’s not suitable as a base or structural material. It’s built for looks and drainage, and it does both very well. Like all loose stone, it will migrate over time without edging or a border to contain it, so a simple landscape border goes a long way toward keeping things tidy.
If you’re unsure whether river rock or pea gravel is the right fit for your project, the main difference is size and visual impact — pea gravel is finer and more subtle, while the #67 makes more of a statement.
