Vitality Shade Mate Grass Seed

$95.25

Shade Mate is a premium fine fescue blend from Chesapeake Valley Seed, purpose-built for lawns where sunlight is limited. The blend is built around three complementary fine fescue varieties — Woodall Chewings Fescue, Minimus Hard Fescue, and Oracle Creeping Red Fescue — making up nearly 90% of the mix, with Wild Horse Kentucky Bluegrass and SR4650 Perennial Ryegrass rounding it out. All varieties are named and certified, with 0% crop seed and 0% weed seed guaranteed. Available in 25 lb and 10 lb bags.

10 lb bag — $44.50.

Common Uses

  • Shaded lawns under trees and along wooded edges
  • North-facing slopes and areas with limited direct sunlight
  • Thin or bare spots under tree canopy
  • Mixed sun/shade lawns where other grasses struggle

Good to Know
Shade seed performs best in areas receiving at least 3–4 hours of dappled or filtered sunlight daily. In very dense shade — think directly under a thick canopy with heavy root competition — even the best shade mix will struggle to produce a full, thick lawn. That’s not a seed problem, it’s just the reality of growing grass in low light. Expect a thinner, more open turf in the deepest shade areas, and don’t be discouraged if density takes time to build. Pruning lower tree limbs to let in more light makes a noticeable difference. For heavily shaded areas where grass simply won’t cooperate, a ground cover or mulch may be a better long-term solution — we’re happy to talk through your options.

Seeding Rates
6–8 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for new lawns; 4–6 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for overseeding. Germination typically occurs in 7–14 days under proper conditions.

For best results, seed between late August and mid-October. Fall is the ideal window for fescue-based mixes in the Fredericksburg area.
